The Southern Cross Brigade offers Australian and New Zealand friends of Cuba the opportunity to learn more about the island nation's unique, yet often misunderstood, political history and to participate in Cuba’s rich cultural heritage. There is no better time to join the brigade and to find out what life is like in socialist Cuba!
Preliminary plans include:
Highlights of the 2023-24 program included a multi-day stay at the Island of Youth (journey via catamaran), a visit to the Korimakao youth art project, exchanges with LGBTIQ social projects and the Federation of Cuban Women, attendance at the National Ballet, a visit Che Guevara Mausoleum, visits to small and medium enterprises, hospitals and schools, and much more!
Preliminary plans include:
- A return to the Island of Youth (to be confirmed dependant on fuel costs and availability). Everyone had a great time on the island earlier this year and we're hoping that a new set of travellers can experience this magical place as well. A number of previous brigadistas asked whether we'd be going again and now we have an answer! If you have always wanted to visit the island and see what it has to offer, the next Brigade may be your best chance.
- We also intend to stay with the young artists at the Korimakao art community once again. This will be our third year in a row at Korimakao and we continue to implement small changes that make the visit better and better. Being embedded and working with Cuban artists is an unforgettable experience and not to be missed.
- Pinar del Río is the current preference for the territory where will spend most of our time outside of the International Camp. It will be the first time in a number of years that the Brigade will be visiting the province and the furthest south we've travelled since the pandemic.
